This Sunday, AQpril 1, 2007, is the Sixth Sunday of the Lenten Season.
Lent has been, since the early church, an extended period of time for "life on the edge," a time of gestation and transition, where people are being formed and supported to move from one way of life to another. The Sixth Sunday is commonly referred to as Palm Sunday, but is also referred to as Passion Sunday as it is the start of Passion week. Hence the Lectionary is divided into two Liturgies...that of the Palms and that of the Passion. The mood swings from celebration to Solemnity in the face of the suffering of Jesus Christ during Passion Week.
Liturgy of Palms
- Luke 19:28-40 Luke tells of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem
- Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29
Liturgy of the Passion
- Isaiah 50:4-9 The servant hear's God's word and faces torture with confidence.
- Psalm 31:9-16
- Philipians 2:5-11Jesus, our pattern for life: he emptied himself; God exalted Him
- Luke 22:14-23:56 Luke's account of the Passion
